Professor James O’Beirne is one of Australia’s leading hepatologists, with over 30 years of clinical and academic experience. He holds a Professorial appointment at Griffith University and is a Senior Staff Specialist at Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH). Trained at two of the world’s foremost liver centres – King’s College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital, London – he is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

Professor O’Beirne holds dual British and Australian specialist recognition (FRCP, FRACP) and is accredited in Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and General Internal Medicine. He completed the European Diploma of Intensive Care Medicine and has extensive experience in the management of critically ill patients with liver disease, including acute liver failure and acute-on-chronic liver failure.

His research credentials are internationally recognised, with an H-index of 39 and over 7,900 citations. He serves as Hepatology Editor for the Internal Medical Journal and is a member of the Baveno Cooperation, the global expert group setting standards for portal hypertension management.

Professor O’Beirne’s private practice offers comprehensive assessment and management of all liver conditions, including MASLD/fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The practice is equipped with FibroScan® technology for rapid, non-invasive assessment of liver scarring and fat – avoiding the need for biopsy in many patients.

A key feature of the practice is access to clinical trials, conducted in collaboration with SCUH, spanning fatty liver disease, liver cancer, hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and advanced cirrhosis. Eligible patients may access novel therapies not yet available through standard care – without travelling to Brisbane.
